Let's talk about gold – one of my all-time favorite materials! ✨
There’s something truly timeless and magical about gold. Its warm, glowing color has made it the centerpiece of jewelry for centuries, and I love how it can be both classic or modern, depending on the design. And let's be honest, who doesn’t love the luxurious feel of a piece that’s crafted in gold?
But it’s not just about looks! Gold is incredibly practical for jewelry worn every day. If you have metal allergies, gold will most likely be a great option for you. While some people are allergic to the alloys added to the gold (not as common now that nickel isn’t used in white gold), the gold itself is hypoallergenic. Another reason I love gold and always recommend it over silver is that gold (yellow in particular) will not tarnish like silver! While it may lose its bright luster over time, it will not turn black or green. Yellow gold looks good even after years and years of wear. The same is true for white gold. It may start to get a faint yellow tint after many years, but a quick polish brings it right back to white!
From a craftsman’s perspective, gold is one of my favorite materials to work with. It is the perfect balance between soft and hard metals. It’s soft enough to work with fairly easily but hard enough to be durable and hold its shape – perfect for everything from intricate designs to sturdy, modern designs. Gold also conducts heat differently than silver which makes it way easier to solder. This allows for more options during hand fabrication and during repair work.
One of the best things about gold jewelry, though, is that it can be melted down and made into something new! If you've inherited gold jewelry that just isn't your style, we can redesign it into something that you will love to wear while still honoring the one who gave you the original piece. Jewelry is meant to be worn, so let's be sure to recreate those gold pieces that have been sitting in your jewelry box unworn.
